BCCI Makes Significant Rule Changes Ahead of IPL 2024 Season, Allowing Two Bouncers Per Over: Report

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has reportedly implemented a significant rule change ahead of the start of the auction in Dubai. The IPL will allow bowlers to bowl two bouncers per over beginning with the 2019 season, making the battle between bat and ball more competitive.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) put the rule to the test in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, a domestic T20 tournament in India. It will now be implemented during the IPL 2024 season.

According to ESPNCricinfo, the rule has already been approved and will be implemented in the coming season. This rule change has piqued the interest of Indian pacer Jyadev Unadkat.

“I do feel two bouncers an over is very much useful, and I feel it’s one of those things which gives the bowler an added advantage over batsmen,” Unadkat said in an interview with ESPNcricinfo. “Because, for example, if I bowl a slower bouncer… the batsman in the preceding case is certain that there will be no more bouncers.”

Even if you bowl one slower bouncer in the first half of the over, you can still use one more [in the over] in this case. Someone weak against bouncers will have to improve, giving the bowler another weapon in their arsenal. So, I believe it’s a minor with a significant impact, and as a bowler, I believe it’s critical to have that rule.”

“You have one more option in the deathovers,” he added. “As a result, it became more yorker-oriented [bowling] in death overs for fast bowlers.

” It can’t be a yorker, slower ball, and bouncer because two bouncers equal an over. Even if you don’t bowl the second bouncer, the batsman still expects the bowler to bowl the second bouncer.”

The rule could have an impact on the 10 franchises’ mindset as they look to sign some of the auction’s top pacers.

Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Geral Coetzee, Josh Hazlewood, and others are already at the top of teams’ wish lists. The rule change may increase competition for them even more.
