India Star Pacer Mohammed Shami In Running For Arjuna Award

According to sources, India’s experienced sprinter Mohammed Shami is in the running for the Arjun Award. The selection committee has recommended Shami for this year’s prestigious Arjuna award following his outstanding performance in the cricket World Cup 2023. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made a special request to the Sports Ministry, according to sources, because Shami’s name was not previously on the list. The Arjuna Award is the highest sporting honor. Throughout the season, the 33-year-old was outstanding for the Men in Blue. The right-arm pacer extended his World Cup winning streak into November.

He took 15 wickets at an average of 12.06 and a strike rate of 5.68. Overall, he finished the 2023 Cricket World Cup as the leading wicket-taker, with 24 wickets from only seven innings.

This month’s highlight performance was a stunning 5/18 against Sri Lanka at Wankhede. Sri Lanka were already under pressure in a 358-run chase when Shami arrived at the end of the first Powerplay. He batted through their middle and lower order in five overs.

A laser-focused 2/18 aided in the annihilation of South Africa at Eden Gardens. However, the quick bowler shone in the semi-final against New Zealand.

Shami, the tournament’s leading wicket-taker, was especially impressive given that he didn’t even play for the team when the season began.

Shami emerged as a star bowler after missing his team’s first four games, claiming 24 wickets at an average of 5.26 and 10.70.

Only four players in men’s cricket history have taken more wickets in the Cricket World Cup: Lasith Malinga (56), Mitchell Starc (65), Muttiah Muralitharan (68), and Glenn McGrath (71), with Shami’s returns occurring in ten fewer matches than any of the players above him on the list.

Shami is expected to make his comeback for India in the upcoming two-match Test series against South Africa. The first Test will take place on Boxing Day, December 26th, in Centurion. The second game will be held on January 3rd in Cape Town.
