Cricket World Cup 2023 Semi-Final: India vs New Zealand, India’s Records In Semi-Finals

Cricket World Cup

On Wednesday, November 15, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, India, Team India will play New Zealand in the ODI Cricket World Cup semi-final for the fourth time. 2:00 PM IST is when the match will begin. We examine India’s performance in the ODI Cricket World Cup semi-finals before the elimination game. India’s semi-final performances in the ODI World Cup

In eight of their thirteen ODI World Cup appearances (1983, 1987, 1996, 2003, 2011, 2015, 2019, 2023), India has advanced to the semi-finals. Of the seven semi-finals that India has participated in thus far, the team has won three and lost four of them.

After defeating England in the semi-finals, India won the trophy in the 1983 World Cup. England defeated the Kapil Dev-led Indian team in the semi-finals at the Wankhede in 1987. The sides reconnected in the 1992 World Cup semifinals, with Mohammed Azharuddin’s team losing to England by just nine runs.

In the semi-final of 1996, India and Sri Lanka faced off at the storied Eden Gardens. Unfortunately, crowd unrest forced the match to be called off, which meant India lost.

India finished in the last four of the 2003 World Cup, having missed the semi-finals in 1999. Under Sourav Ganguly’s leadership, the team defeated Kenya handily to make it to the final.

Under the direction of MS Dhoni, India defeated Pakistan, their bitter rivals, by a margin of 29 runs in the 2011 World Cup semi-final. After that, India lost to Australia and New Zealand in the two World Cup semifinal matches that followed (in 2015 and 2019).

Batting Records

With 233 runs in three matches, batting legend Sachin Tendulkar leads India in run scoring in the ODI World Cup semi-finals. Tendulkar made his debut in the semi-finals, scoring a heroic 65 to help India defeat Sri Lanka and reach a target of 251.

In the beginning, India was winning handily. Tendulkar’s removal, though, set off a collapse that saw India down to 120/8 before the match was abandoned owing to unruly spectators.

Seven years later, Tendulkar was crucial to the outcome, making a brilliant 83 against Kenya in the 2003 World Cup semi-final.

This knock helped India win the match in the round of four. In the ODI World Cup semi-final at Mohali, MS Dhoni-led India squared off against bitter rivals Pakistan after an eight-year break.

Tendulkar chose to bat and produced an incredible innings, scoring 85 runs to help India reach 260/9. After that, the Indian bowlers hit Pakistan for 231 runs, earning a trip to the championship game.

Sachin Tendulkar is the top run scorer but has never scored a century in a World Cup semifinal. This honor belongs to Sourav Ganguly, the former captain of India. A World Cup semi-final match features the lone centurion for India, a left-handed batter.

In the 2003 ODI World Cup final-four match, he scored an undefeated 111 against Kenya to accomplish this feat. Ganguly hit five boundaries and five sixes in his 114-ball innings.

Bowling Records

Together, former pacer Zaheer Khan and cricket legend Kapil Dev of India own the record for most wickets taken in World Cup semifinal matches. Having played in two World Cup semi-finals (1983 and 1987), Kapil Dev claimed five wickets in all.

Against England in the 1983 World Cup, he put up a remarkable 3/35 in 11 overs, which went a long way toward helping India win by six wickets. Even though it was a losing effort, Kapil Dev finished with figures of 2/38 against England in the 1987 World Cup.

However, in his first-ever World Cup semi-final matchup against Kenya, Zaheer Khan recorded figures of 3/14. In the 2011 World Cup, the left-arm pacer was instrumental in India’s 29-run victory over Pakistan, finishing with figures of 2/58.

India vs New Zealand Record

When it comes to the ICC World Cup, Team India and New Zealand have a long history together. In ten ODI World Cup matches, the Men in Blue have faced the Kiwis, winning four and losing five. There was no outcome in one match.

The most recent meeting between the two teams occurred in the 2019 World Cup semifinals. India lost by eighteen runs and was eliminated. Nonetheless, in the 2023 ODI World Cup league stage, India defeated New Zealand.
