The unusual dismissal of Angelo Mathews, Shakib Al Hassan gets massive backlash

Shakib Al Hassan

During a World Cup 2023 match in Delhi on Monday, Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan was asked by the umpires to withdraw his appeal for a timed out against Angelo Mathews. However, he did not regret it. According to fourth umpire Adrian Holdstock, Shakib was asked twice if he would like to withdraw the appeal by on-field umpires Marais Erasmus and Richard Illingworth, two highly experienced ICC Elite Panel match officials. However, the Bangladesh all-rounder remained unmoved. Mathews was consequently given a timed out, making him the first cricket player in the history of international cricket.

“After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless time has been called, be ready to receive the ball or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within two minutes of the dismissal or retirement,” states Rule 40.1.1 of the ICC’s playing conditions. The incoming batter will be out, timed out, if this condition is not satisfied.

“I told Emperors that I didn’t want to call him back,” Shakib said.

Shakib claimed that he was only following the rules of the game and that anyone who had a problem with that should ask the ICC to alter the regulations.

“I appealed to the umpires, and they informed me that it wouldn’t look good if I said he was out and you called him back. After Bangladesh won the contentious match by three wickets, Shakib said in the press conference that followed, “I said I won’t call him back.”

The captain of Bangladesh responded, “Well, then ICC should look into it and change the rules,” when questioned about the spirit of cricket.

It’s in the laws, he said. Playmaker of the Match Shakib, who scored 82 off 65 and 2/57 with the ball, said, “I don’t know if it’s right or wrong, but I had to decide to, you know, make sure that my team wins, and whatever I had to do, I had to do it.”
