Aryna Sabalenka Into Second Wimbledon Semi-Final

Aryna Sabalenka

On Wednesday, Aryna Sabalenka defeated American Madison Keys in straight sets to go to her second Wimbledon semifinal. Sabalenka, the second-ranked player in the world and a semifinalist in 2021, triumphed 6-2, 6-4, and she will play either the defending champion Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan or Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur for a spot in the championship round on Saturday. Sabalenka was expelled from the 2022 competition together with all Russian and Belarusian competitors after the invasion of Ukraine.

Moscow counts Belarus as an important ally.

The fight was incredible, and I’m thrilled to be back in the semi-final. I just want to improve on last time,” Sabalenka remarked.

In the last four of 2021, Karolina Pliskova defeated her in three sets.

Madison is a fantastic athlete. I’m so glad I came back after falling behind 2-4 and 0-40 in the second set, she exclaimed.

“I used to dream about winning Wimbledon when I was a young child. Here, there’s something unique.

With her American opponent making 10 unforced errors—twice as many as the more accurate Belarusian—Sabalenka secured a double break in the first and fifth games of the opening set.

At 1-4 in the first set and competing in her second Wimbledon quarterfinal, Keys also required a quick courtside visit from the match doctor.

The world number 18 led 4-2 in the second set after breaking, and she was 40-0 in the following game before all her hard work was undone.

After 87 minutes of play on Court One, Sabalenka, 25, made the American pay by holding and breaking again for a 5-4 advantage, which was converted into victory off a second match point.
