Kiran George of India resumed his winning streak on Thursday by defeating Weng Hong Yang of China, ranked 26th in the world, in straight games to advance to the quarterfinals of the Thailand Open Super 500 competition.

In the men’s singles round of 16 match, Kiran, the world’s 59th-ranked player, defeated his higher-ranked Chinese opponent 21-11, 21-19, in 39 minutes.

Kiran George has never before advanced to the quarterfinals of a BWF World Tour Super 500 competition.

The winner of the 2022 Odisha Open will compete against the victor of Friday’s match between Toma Junior Popov of France and Ng Ka Long Angus of Hong Kong.

But for 23-year-old Ashmita Chaliha, who lost to former Olympic and three-time World Champion Carolina Marin of Spain, it was the end of the journey.

Later on in the day, pre-quarterfinal matches involving Saina Nehwal, Lakshya Sen, and the men’s doubles team of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty would be played.

Six tiers make up the BWF World Tour: World Tour Finals, four Super 1000s, six Super 750s, seven Super 500s, and eleven Super 300s. The BWF Tour Super 100 level is another tournament level that awards ranking points.

According to the BWF tournament rating system, the Super 500 is a Grade 2 (level 4) competition.
