Asian Championships: Jeremy Lalrinnunga Finishes Event, But Wins Silver In Snatch

Asian-championships

In a poor performance at the Asian Championships in Jinju, Korea on Sunday, Indian weightlifter Jeremy Lalrinnunga won a silver medal in the snatch event but was unable to tally an overall total since he was unable to lift the weight in each of his three attempts at the clean and jerk. The only competitor in the 12-lifter field to not finish (DNF) his event was Jeremy, who was taking part in his first competition since the 2022 Commonwealth Games. However, the 20-year-old lifted 141 kg, matching a personal record, in the non-Olympic 67 kg weight class to take home a silver medal in the snatch competition.

In his first two efforts at the clean and jerk, Jeremy was unable to lift 165 kg. The weight was then upped to 168 kg, which was 2 kg higher than his personal best, but the current Youth Olympic champion struggled once again.

Jeremy was only able to heave the barbell thrice out of six tries—three in the snatch and three in the clean and jerk.

The Mizo lifter, who missed the World Championship due to a thigh injury last year, was rusty right away.

His championship got off to a rough start as his right knee gave out after his first snatch attempt of 137 kg. On his second attempt, he was able to raise the same weight with ease.

Before things started to go south for him, Jeremy improved the snatch mark with a successful 141 kg attempt to record the second-highest lift in the section.

One could see the Indian’s disappointment during the gold presentation as the lifter stood on the podium.

He Yueji of China won the competition with a weight of 320 kg (147 kg 173 kg), while Lee Sangyeon, a local favorite, ended in second place with a weight of 314 kg (139 kg 175 kg), and Ergashev Adkhamjon of Uzbekistan won third place with a weight of 312 kg (138 kg 173 kg).

Bindyarani Devi won silver in the women’s 55kg competition on Saturday to start India’s medal count.
