“My State Manipur Is Burning”: Mary Kom Appeals For Help Amid Violence

On Thursday, boxing legend MC Mary Kom pleaded with the Centre to do something to stop the unrest in Manipur. To maintain order in the northeastern state where fighting broke out during a tribal revolt on Wednesday, the Army and Assam Rifles were sent in. The seasoned fighter tweeted in the wee hours, “My state Manipur is burning, kindly help,” uploading images of the violence and tagging Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

An army spokesperson claimed that when the Army and Assam Rifles were sent in throughout the night, they worked with the state police to put an end to the violence by dawn.

He said that more individuals are being relocated to safer locations. So far, 4,000 people have been rescued and given refuge by the troops from the violence-hit districts, he said.

Flag marches are being held to maintain control over the situation, he said.

The violence started on Wednesday during a “Tribal Solidarity March” organized by the All Tribal Student Union Manipur (ATSUM) in the Churachandpur district’s Torbung area to protest the non-tribal Meiteis’ quest for Scheduled Tribe (ST) designation, which dominates the Imphal Valley.

According to a senior police officer, thousands of protesters participated in the event, which saw conflicts between tribal and non-tribal members and later expanded to neighboring districts. PTI SOM SOM CORR
