IPL 2023: Kolkata Knight Riders Sign Explosive Opening Pitcher to Replace Shakib Al Hasan

Kolkata Knight Riders

After all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan chose to skip the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) announced the signing of England opener Jason Roy. According to an IPL announcement, Roy, who originally cost INR 1.5 crore, has been hired for INR 2.8 crore for the 16th IPL season. Following the withdrawal of captain Shreyas Iyer due to illness, Shakib was the second prominent player to be sidelined for the duration of the season.

The two-time champion Knight Riders only added Roy to their roster, but Shakib and Iyer were recently ruled out due to injuries. If the team is seeking to replace captain Iyer, that hasn’t been confirmed yet.

Roy last played for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2021 season. Roy had previously appeared in the 2017 and 2018 seasons. He participated in five games in 2021 and scored 150 runs, including a half-century. The 32-year-old has participated in 64 Twenty20 Internationals for England and has scored 1522 runs at a strike rate of 137.61 with 8 fifty-pluses.

First, Bangladesh’s top all-rounder Shakib withdrew from the competition due to personal obligations and international obligations. The following day, regular Iyer, who is also their mainstay batsman, was also forced to withdraw from the IPL because he will need surgery to address a back injury.

The Chandrakant Pandit-coached team may experience a leadership problem as a result of Iyer’s complete injury. KKR had appointed Nitish Rana as their stand-in skipper in the anticipation that their regular skipper would return in the second half of the season.

The team is urgently trying to find some solace in its den, and “accidental” skipper Rana, who has experience leading Delhi in white-ball cricket, has a huge job ahead of him.

When the Knight Riders take on the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the upcoming IPL match, they will seek solace at home and try to get back on track with victories.
