Against India, Usman Khawaja’s century
keeps Australia ahead.

At the conclusion of the first day of the series-deciding fourth Test against India in Ahmedabad on Thursday, Australia were 255 for four. At the end of play, Usman Khawaja, the opener, and Cameron Green both had batting averages of 104 and 49. Australia got off to a strong start as captain Steve Smith decided to bat, as Usman Khawaja and Travis Head combined for 61 runs for the first wicket.

R Ashwin dismissed a promising-looking Head for 32, giving India their first victory. When Smith was dismissed by Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammad Shami bowled Peter Handscomb (17) and Marnus Labuschagne (3) with two exquisite deliveries.

India is up 2-1 in the series.

255/4 in 90 overs (Usman Khawaja 104 not out, Cameron Green 49 not out, Steve Smith 38; Mohammed Shami 2/65) for Australia in their first innings.
