The ICC apologies and explains the cause of the “ranking glitch” that ranked India as the top test team

India replaced Australia as the top-ranked men’s Test squad on Wednesday, and the International Cricket Council (ICC) has apologized for the technological error that allowed this to happen. The ICC released another revised list showing Rohit Sharma’s team back at No. 2 hours after India had reclaimed the top spot in the Test rankings. It appeared as though Rohit’s squad momentarily had the top place after defeating Pat Cummins-led Australia by an innings and 132 runs in Nagpur.

The world governing body of the sport acknowledged the mistake on Thursday, saying in a statement, “ICC admits that, for a brief moment on February 15, 2023, due to a technological error, India were erroneously represented as the No. 1 Test team on the ICC website.

We apologize for the trouble we may have caused. “With the most recent update following the end of Zimbabwe’s two-match series against the West Indies, Australia are on top of the ICC Test Team Rankings.” The ICC statement continued, “Australia will enter the second Test against India in Delhi, beginning on Friday, January 17, as the No.1-ranked side with 126 rating points, 11 ahead of India’s 115.

“India is competing to advance to the ICC World Test Championship final in 2021–2023. Australia is also vying for a spot in the championship game, which will be held at London’s The Oval from June 7 to June 11.”
