Cricket’s eagerly awaited participation in the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles gained a boost when it was included on the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) shortlist for evaluation alongside eight other sports.

At the 1900 Olympic Games in Paris, only Great Britain and the host nation of France participated in the sport of cricket.

The International Cricket Committee (ICC) was formally invited by the LA28 and IOC to submit a presentation in order to get their case evaluated, and ESPN Cricinfo reports that the development took place a day after that.

However, A final decision is planned to be made public before to the IOC session in Mumbai in the middle of 2023. Baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse, breakdancing, karate, kickboxing, squash, and racing are the other eight sports that might be the main event.

The IOC said in February of this year that the Los Angeles Games would feature a total of 28 sporting competitions and that “possible new sports” will be taken into consideration with an emphasis on children.

A sport must meet a certain set of requirements, according to IOC policy, in order to be considered for inclusion. The women’s T20 version of cricket is presently being played among eight nations as part of the ongoing Commonwealth Games, albeit only the women’s teams are taking part.

However, an athletic event must be open to both men and women in order to be included in the Olympic Games. Cricket has been a “star attraction” during the main event, according to ICC CEO Geoff Allardice, who expressed his satisfaction with how the sport was seen during the Birmingham Games.

The website quotes Allardice as saying, “We’ve seen from the Commonwealth Games how much the world’s greatest players have relished playing in front of enormous crowds and what I’m sure will be significant TV viewers.”
