In his home city of Multan, Pakistani opener Imam-ul-Haq wants his team to dominate England.

In just their third Test victory in Pakistan, England won the series opener at Rawalpindi on the fifth day after racking up 921 runs in just 136.5 overs over their two innings, including 506 from 75 overs on the first day.

Imam, who scored a century in Pakistan’s opening innings, thinks the home team could have played more aggressively in their second outing. In that game, Pakistan was dismissed for 268 while chasing 343 as England won by 74 runs on the most unforgiving of fields.

Now, Pakistan must win in Multan this week in order to maintain their chances of winning the series.

“There were opportunities [at Rawalpindi] which we didn’t collect,” Imam said to Sky Sports Cricket. We struggled to bat in the previous session. Although I believe we should have won that Test match, kudos to the English players. Brilliant captaincy came from Ben Stokes.

“Chasing 657 puts you perpetually behind, therefore we must also prevail. In the second inning, we didn’t play all that well. We had opportunities to attack and win the Test match at times.

“It’s exciting to see England perform in their Test matches. Despite our excitement, we shall exercise control over what we can. We need to be mentally tough, have fresh ideas, and trust that today will be our day.”
