The women’s hockey team has a lot riding on them to improve on their bronze medal performance in the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea. The squad entered this competition after finishing in the quarterfinals of the just finished Women’s Hockey World Cup. In the quarterfinals, Ireland defeated India 3-1 in a shootout, ending India’s 44-year-old hopes of making it to the semifinals. With Rani Rampal serving as captain, this team enjoyed a successful 2017. They won the 9th Women’s Asia Cup.

Last month, the Asian Games roster was revealed, with Rani at the forward position. Savita, a star goalie, has been selected the vice-captain, and Rajani Etimarpu will stand alongside her at the goalpost. The team’s midfield will contain Namita Toppo, Lilima Minz, Monika, Udita, Nikki Pradhan, and Neha Goyal, while the defense will include Deep Grace Ekka, Sunita Lakra, Deepika, Reena Khokhar, and drag-flicker Gurjit Kaur.

Along with the seasoned Rani, other forwards include Vandana Katariya, Lalremsiami, Navneet Kaur, and Navjot Kaur.

Sjoerd Marijne, the head coach, emphasized the need for the team to have the ideal balance of youth and experience. “We have a fantastic balance of young and seasoned players. I’m pleased to observe that everyone of them has had experience playing high-level matches “said Marijne.

Given their outstanding performances in Asian tournaments, this is the team’s best chance to win gold (Asian Champions Trophy – winners in 2016; runners-up in 2018).
