Five things are still up for grabs in the final days of baseball’s regular season in the MLB postseason picture.

What’s still on the line before the postseason in the 2022 MLB regular season?
The regular season of Major League Baseball is nearing its conclusion. On Wednesday night, the season will end unless something unexpected happens. The wild-card round will then start on Friday, after which everyone will get Thursday off. There is no chance for a Game 163 scenario because MLB eliminated tiebreaker games this season as part of the introduction of the enlarged postseason.

There are still many matters that need to be resolved across the majors, even if there are only three days remaining until the majority of the league enters the offseason. Before the playoffs start, there are five issues that CBS Sports has identified below.

Winner of the National League East
The biggest series of the weekend was between the Atlanta Braves and the New York Mets, a three-game set that the Braves swept to turn a one-game deficit in the division into a two-game advantage.

The season series between the two teams was tied at 9-9 going into Sunday night’s game. The Braves gained control of the tiebreaker with their victory. In other words, the Mets can only take first place in the division if they have the better overall record. For their part, the Braves will capture the division with either one more victory or a Mets defeat, whichever happens first.

The victor will not only be allowed to display a division champion banner, but also receive a first-round bye due to having the second-best record in the NL. Conversely, the loser will have to make do with hosting a Wild Card Series this weekend.

The Mets will face the Washington Nationals, while the Braves still have the Miami Marlins.

  1. Last available NL wild-card place
With three games remaining, the Philadelphia Phillies had a two-game lead over the Milwaukee Brewers. Furthermore, having won the season series 4-2, the Phillies hold the tiebreaker over the Brewers.

Therefore, there is only one outcome left for the Phillies to achieve their goal: either they win or the Brewers lose. In other words, for the Brewers to advance to October, they would need to win out and have the Phillies lose out.

  1. Home-field benefit
The Houston Astros and Los Angeles Dodgers both have home-field advantages in all of their postseason games, including the League Championship Series. We also know that the No. 2 seeds and hosts of the Division Series will be the New York Yankees and the NL East victor. Otherwise?

4. The AL Wild Card Series will likely be hosted by the Cleveland Guardians against the Tampa Bay Rays. The Toronto Blue Jays are now 2 1/2 games ahead of the Seattle Mariners in the battle to host the other Wild Card Series. The remaining four games for the Mariners are all against the Detroit Tigers.

The NL’s Wild Card Series will be hosted by the team that finishes last in the East, but it’s unclear which team will go there or travel to St. Louis to play the Cardinals. The San Diego Padres lead the Philadelphia Phillies by one game. The San Francisco Giants will be the final opponent on the Padres’ schedule, while the Astros will host the Phillies, who have the tiebreaker against the Padres.
