Due to unpaid bills, a hospital in Pakistan refuses to release the body of Olympian Manzoor Hussain.

Hussain, also referred to as Manzoor Junior, was a member of the teams that took home the bronze and gold medals in the Olympics in 1976 and 1984, respectively.

Manzoor Hussain, a former captain of Pakistan’s hockey team and an Olympian, passed away from a heart arrest on Monday, but a private hospital in Lahore delayed releasing his body for many hours until his medical bills were paid in full. Hussain, also referred to as Manzoor Junior, was a member of the teams that took home the bronze and gold medals in the Olympics in 1976 and 1984, respectively. He also played on the hockey teams that captured the 1978 and 1982 World Cups.

Hussain, 64, who had a cardiac condition, was admitted to the hospital early on Monday morning as his condition worsened. The Olympian died while being treated at Shalimar Hospital in Lahore.

“The great player’s body was detained by the hospital administration for a number of hours due to unpaid medical bills. Later, the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) took notice of the situation and made arrangements for the hospital to receive PKR 500,000 (USD 2,266) so that his family could pick up his body “PTI was informed by a Punjab government official.

He claimed that the fact that a legendary Olympian passed away and that the hospital withheld his body because of unpaid bills was a big humiliation to everyone.

In a tweet, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his shock and resentment at the man’s passing.

He claimed that the country’s gold medalist Manzoor Hussain Jr. “was an asset to the country and his services for Pakistan hockey will stay remembered.”
